Chlorine vs. Saltwater Pools: What's Actually Different
The most common misconception about saltwater pools is that they are chlorine-free; they are not, they just make their own. Kingwood Service Association deed restrictions include tree-preservation requirements that are reviewed before a pool footprint is set, on top of standard village-level approvals.

How a Salt System Actually Works
A salt chlorine generator runs pool water with a low concentration of dissolved salt (far below ocean salinity) through a cell that uses electrolysis to convert the salt into chlorine. The chlorine does the same sanitizing work it would from a bag or a liquid jug; the salt cell is just the delivery method.
Because the system makes chlorine continuously rather than in periodic doses, chlorine levels tend to stay more stable day to day, which is the main day-to-day benefit homeowners notice.
What Still Needs Manual Attention
pH, alkalinity, calcium hardness, and stabilizer still need to be tested and adjusted on a salt pool exactly as on a traditionally chlorinated one; the salt cell does not manage any of those.
Salt cells wear out, typically in the 3-7 year range depending on usage and water quality, and need periodic cleaning to remove scale buildup. A pool converting to salt also needs the right starting equipment: not every existing pump/filter setup is salt-cell compatible without a controller upgrade.
FAQs
Is salt water bad for pool equipment or decking?
At the low concentrations used in residential pools, salt is far less corrosive than ocean water, but certain metal fixtures, ladders, lights, and some stone decking can still show wear faster than with traditional chlorine; stainless-rated hardware is the standard fix.
Can I convert an existing chlorine pool to salt?
In most cases yes, by adding a salt cell and controller and dissolving the initial salt charge; a repair/equipment visit can confirm whether the existing plumbing and pump are compatible before conversion.
